New Year, New You: Self Care

Self Care

The practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress.

Taken from Oxford Languages

In a general sense, self-care refers to activities undertaken with the intention of enhancing energy, restoring health and reducing stress. There are many ways to do this and self-care is something that can be personalised for every individual.

Taken from Everymind.org.au

2020 was a difficult year across the globe. On top of your usual every day stresses, the year threw sickness, natural disasters, and the stress of constant change. If you are anything like me, 2020 was exhausting not just physically but emotionally and mentally.

In environments that are out of your control and ones that you must return to each day, it is important to look after yourself. During these times, self care is so important. Looking after yourself, and taking the time to put your needs first is important.

As we head into a new year, one hopefully less stressful and taxing, the below information is designed to quickly inform you about what self care is, self care activities, further reading, and some of my own old self care posts.

Self Care Activities

  • Have a bath – A favourite of mine is the relaxing bath. Often I will use a bath bomb, bubble bath, bath salts, or a bubble bar. Just taking a moment to relax in warm water often gives myself a chance to catch my breath and unwind.
  • Leave your place of work for lunch – Gran your lunch and head outside. In warm weather there is nothing better than sitting on a bench and just getting away from work. I know not everyone can leave during their lunch break so any moment that can get you to refocus from the workplace and truly separate yourself is ideal.
  • Reconnect with or learn a hobby – Do you no longer spend time doing things that make you happy? Not enough hours in the day to draw or play an instrument like you used to? Make the time to reconnect or learn something that makes you happy.
  • Have a cuppa – Another favourite of mine is to take the time to make a nice cup of tea. Steeping the tea, using a nice tea pot, and doing nothing but focus on the treat is a nice way to make time for and spoil myself.
  • Technology Detox – If you work a lot on a screen or if you are constantly glued to your phone, why not take a moment to put the tech down. Take an hour where you read a book, go for a walk, or cook yourself a nice meal. Sometimes getting away from the constant presence of a work inbox or the non stop alerts from social media can help you take a breath and refocus.
  • At the end of the day self care can be anything that you value or makes you feel better about yourself or your situation.

Self Care Saturday: Mmmelting Marshmallow Moment Bath Oil

Mmmelting Marshmallow Moments Bath Oil by Lush

For a sweet, sweet bath there is a sweet, sweet treat and in this sweet, sweet bath take a sweet, sweet seat.

Let your troubles mmm…elt away, as skin is softened and soothed by shea butter, almond oil and calamine. And, if its bright yellow and pink sandwich of colours doesn’t bring to mind dolly mixtures, its candy floss scent surely will.

Taken from the Lush AU website.

Slowly my opinion of bath oils is changing for the better and it is all thanks to Lush. I first tried one in Polyamorous and Mmmelting Marshmallow Moments is just as mind changing as the first. Lush’s bath oils make my skin so soft, how could you not love that?

Black Rose is intense! The scent of the bath is strong and aromatic with my bathroom smelling of roses for days after using the bath bomb. The bath water is also so amazing to look at – black but with silver glitter shimmering in the among the water.

Okay, so I do realise that so far a lot of these ‘Self Care Saturday’ posts have been taken up by bath bombs. Any why wouldn’t they? Bath bombs are great! But another aspect of self care for me, is looking after myself during my more stressful moments.

Ways that I am able to do this is by trying to relax with a cup of tea. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the tea itself that helps, but the tea making process – namely being able to get out of the moment, to step away, and have a cuppa.

You may have noticed that the majority of the Self Care Saturday posts are about bath bombs or other bath related items – well fear not because this week I am using this space for a book review!

Make Yourself Cozy is a beautiful book by Kate Vaz that not only educates about self care but has so many cute illustrations that illustrate examples of how you can practise self care yourself.

Soak Infusion – Lavender + Hibiscus is really pretty looking bath salt. On a recent trip to Canberra I picked up a sample pack of five bath salts by Salts by Hendrix. Lavender + Hibiscus was my first soak from the pack and it was a little bit different than my usual.

Self Care Saturday: Groovy Kind of Love by Lush

Groovy Kind of Love by Lush

Fill your bathtub with peace, love and positivity – melting into rings of rainbow colour, Groovy Kind Of Love is built with trippy hippies in mind. Flower children will fall for this combination of rosewood, bergamot and ylang ylang oil, which will lift spirits and leave your skin toned, balanced and refreshed.

Taken from the Lush AU website.

Okay so I may chosen this bath bomb solely because it is rainbow. Groovy Kind of Love has the added bonus of not just looking great but it is such a nice experience. The scent of the bath bomb is Rosewood Oil, Bergamot Oil, and Ylang Ylang – which combines to make this smooth and fun smell which was oddly exhilarating.

Oh who am I kidding, Groovy Kind of Love is like bathing in lolly scented water and it is amazing!

Self Care Saturday: Strawberries and Cream by Lush

Strawberries and Cream by Lush

What could be better than bathing in a big bath full of strawberries and cream? Use whole, or twist in half to share with a loved one. Fruity strawberry powder freshens and tones, while the creamy filling in this sandwiched bath bomb melts, leaving behind deeply softening water. A touch of black pepper oil gives this bath bomb an edge and brings out its sweet berry scent.

Taken from the Lush AU website.

Strawberries and Cream by Lush is such a fun time. The colours of the bath are a nice soothing pink and the scent is so smooth and lovely. Part of Lush’s #WetheBathers promotion which has seen 50(!) new bath bombs be added to their shop, Strawberries and Cream is one that I had to try.

Self Care Saturday: More Tea and Sympathy by Lush

More Tea and Sympathy by Lush

A soothing, cleansing soak is anyone’s cup of tea. Lay back and steep to your heart’s content as an Earl Grey tea bag emerges from the bright pink fizzing teapot that releases a feel-good bergamot and neroli fragrance and a spattering of blue cornflowers. With green tea to clarify and cleanse the skin, there’s plenty of reason to treat yourself or a loved one to a much-deserved cuppa.

Taken from the Lush AU website.

Okay so I just want to start off by saying that this bath bomb is a teapot. With an actual teabag inside 😲Not only is it themed to the max with a lovely scent but after the bath bomb has dissolved, you continue to steep because it has an Early Grey teabag inside 🥰

Be still my beating heart!

Self Care Saturday: Goddess by Lush

Goddess by Lush

Heavenly scent, jasmine absolute seduces you into lilac and silver waters, while the darkness of oudh and the richness of sandalwood keep you there, lingering a little longer. Precious ingredients for a true goddess, lifting your mind to a higher plane.

As each layer unfolds and sodium bicarbonate sends colours swirling, something divine happens to your body. Feel your muscles warming, feel your blood pumping, feel your strength.

Legend says Cleopatra bathed in milk, but a true goddess bathes in butters. Fair Trade Colombian cocoa butter and shea butter melt into creamy waters, then a skin-softening slick of liquid gold argan oil, a holy trinity of moisturisation. Behind the shea and argan, are stories of empowered women’s groups in Ghana and Morocco. Not age-old legends of celestial beings, but real stories from Planet Earth of building communities and defending the natural world.

Do you believe God is a woman?

Taken from the Lush Australia site.

If you only ever buy one Lush bath bomb, make it this one!

Goddess by Lush is such a beautiful and luxurious experience. The water was an amazing and rich purple colour with a surprising depth – Submerging my hand only a tiny bit, I could no longer see my hand beneath the colour and glitter.
