Poetry has the power to move people; it can speak to us, can convey emotions, and make us feel.
Poetry has the power to change people; it can make us see things differently, change how we feel, and force us to confront emotions.
Poetry has power.
Whatever your feelings are on poetry, whether you think its frivolous, tough to understand, or an amazing way of communicating human emotions, it can have a lasting effect on readers.
Across the week I will be posting five poems that, since reading them, have changed me and my life. The poems are ones that have, in one way or another, had an affect on me, have changed how I feel, and have floated around in my brain in the years since reading them.
I’ve posted the below poem previously on my blog and there’s a reason why, I literally cannot get this poem out of my head. I can quote this to you at the drop of a hat and if you start a sentence with, ‘if I could,’ I will finish your sentence with one of the lines.
The poem has changed my life, as it was one of the first poems that I read that really struck me. There was an ‘oh’ moment, one that just made sense, and it affected how I viewed poetry. Previous to reading this poem, I had dismissed poetry as artsy and out of reach but reading this simple poem, made the power of a few carefully selected words really hit home.
So I hope you enjoy the below poem by Spike Milligan entitled, Love Song.
Aside from my brains devotion to the words of the poem, I do love this poem for the absolutely beautiful and morbid imagining of love. The comparison between the the physical manifestation of love and drowning someone, is where the poem really hits me.
My partner says that the styles of music I like are predictable because I’m a sucker for a syncopated beat and the same is true for my favourite poems – they’re all a little bit macabre. Spike Milligan is an absolute gem because like the man himself, he has some truly funny and messed up poems.
Are there any poems that have changed your life? Any poets that speak to your soul? Comment and let me know 🙂
